Assembled
A locked, shielded box built around one sealed capsule of Iridium-192, a few millimetres across.

Exploded
Housing, handle and end plates come away. The front plate takes the guide tube; the rear holds the lock and the drive-cable connector.

X-ray
The core is depleted uranium. The source rests mid-way along an S-shaped tube, so there is no straight line for radiation to escape.

Exposure
A hand crank pushes the source down the guide tube to the collimator over the weld. Film on the far side records what passes through.

Read the film
The source winds back into the shield. On the radiograph, dark spots in the weld bead: gas porosity, found without cutting the steel.

Dye Penetrant Testing
Also called liquid penetrant inspection: a widely used, low-cost way to find surface-breaking defects in any non-porous material. We supply every kind of cleaner, penetrant and developer to secure your assets.

Field off
The yoke drives magnetic flux across the plate. A crack across the flux path forces some of it to leak out at the surface, and the iron particles pile up right there.

Magnetic Particle Inspection
MPI detects surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic material such as iron, nickel, cobalt and some of their alloys. NSN Traders supplies every kind of material needed to carry it out.
